StartUP Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma University are joining forces for a new business survey.

StartUP Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma University Faculty of Business and Economics are teaming to launch a survey aimed at entrepreneurs and small business owners in Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding Algoma region.

The initiative goal is to understand the current business supports, identify issues and improve resources.

The survey invites participants to share their awareness and experiences with existing programs and to offer insights on tools, training, and support needed for a long-lasting impact. The feedback gathered will help inform the development of future programs and strategies in collaboration with community partners.

“We’re calling on all entrepreneurs and small business owners to lend their voice,” says President of StartUP Sault Holly Infanti. “Your input will directly influence how we strengthen our local entrepreneurial ecosystem and support your success.”

This research initiative is part of a broader collaboration called the Northern Entrepreneurial Impact Circle - a network of community champions, investors, and entrepreneurs committed to advancing fresh, community-informed, meaningful business practices.

“We’re exploring ways to inspire entrepreneurs in tackling regional challenges through their business ventures,” says Algoma University Project Coordinator for Innovative Learning Victoria MacKay-Coutu, who is working with Startup Sault Founder Nevin Buconjic and Algoma University Faculty of Business and Economics Associate Professor Jody-lynn Rebek. “Our next step is to assess the readiness and capacity of Algoma residents to take the initiative and launch ventures to address gaps or solve challenges our communities face. We thank our Northern Entrepreneurial Impact Circle champions for their commitment and help with this initiative.”

Algoma Department of Business Administration Chair Aaron Gordon and Sierra Stefanizzi, research assistant, have also conducted an environmental scan of the Administration Program in Canada, the U.S., the UK and Europe, to prepare for accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Focus groups will be held to gather feedback on the Bachelor of Business Administration program. All of these efforts will inform course enhancements, innovative programming, stronger collaborations, and pedagogical strategies that align with global standards and local business needs.

The survey is open until April 25, 2025, and takes approximately ten minutes to complete. All responses are confidential, and participants from all industries are welcome. Access the survey here. Respondents can enter a draw to win one of two $50 gift cards to support local businesses.
