The United Way Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District’s Harvest Algoma Food Resource Centre has partnered with local businesses, food banks, and community volunteers to launch our first annual CANstruction Competition on April 26, 2020.

Canstruction is a global non profit which hosts competitions where awe-inspiring structures are created entirely out of canned food. At the close of each competition all food is donated to a local food bank. Canstruction’s mission is to highlight the creativity and compassion of the competing teams, contributors involved, and to collect millions of pounds of food each year for local food banks around the world, all while providing beautiful works of art for the public to marvel.

“We are excited to launch CANstruction in partnership with the Station Mall,” says Mike Delfre, director of operations, Harvest Algoma. “This event will produce a large quantity of canned foods that will go to hungry people as well as draw attention to the challenges many people in our community face when it comes to food security. Hopefully we’ll have a large number of teams sign up this year and the event will become an annual food drive in our city.”

Teams consist of eight people and are required to design and build a structure made entirely from canned goods in a 10x10-foot space. Teams can include businesses, sports teams, church groups, non-profit organizations, friends, family, and many more. Deadline for registration with payment is Feb. 21, 2020.
