Ontario Mine Rescue officer Scott Gillet will be running the 2025 Sudbury Rocks Marathon in full mine rescue gear, adding at least 15.2 kg of weight to his body for the event.

It might be the most unusual private fundraiser effort you will see this year.

A Sudbury man is working to raise money for the Health Sciences North Foundation by taking part in the annual Sudbury Rocks Marathon which takes place on Sunday, May 25.

The big difference is that Scott Gillet is an Ontario Mine Rescue officer. He has pledged to take part in the marathon wearing full mine rescue gear including a  Dräger ProAir breathing apparatus that weighs in at 33 pounds, eight ounces, or 15.2 kilograms.

That doesn’t include the weight of full coveralls, miner’s helmet, safety belt and boots.

It's the same heavy-duty apparatus mine rescuers wear when they respond to emergencies underground where they might encounter poisonous smoke and gas.

"This extreme physical challenge supports a vital cause: raising funds for the HSN Foundation, helping deliver critical healthcare services in the Greater Sudbury area," said the GoFundMe page.

"Every step Scott takes is a commitment to community health — and your support can make a real difference. Donate today and help us reach the finish line together!” said the page.

“All proceeds go directly to the HSN Foundation. Every dollar makes a difference.”

The annual marathon event takes in a full run/walk/relay marathon along with several shorter distances to encourage more Sudbury residents to get involved.

Online registrations are now being accepted through the Sudbury Rocks website.

The event begins at Minto Street next to Tom Davies Square downtown on May 25.

More complete race information is available on the website. Since 2005 (with a three-year break during the COVID-19 pandemic), the Sudbury Rocks Marathon has drawn more than 1,000 participants every year, raising tens of thousands of dollars annually. The event benefits the Health Sciences North Foundation.
