As part of Emergency Preparedness Week, the Municipality of Huron Shores is sharing tips on how to stay safe.
Here are some tips for if your power goes out:
- Stock your emergency kit: Ensure your emergency preparedness kit includes portable light sources (flashlights, candles, glow sticks), extra batteries, non-perishable foods, and plenty of potable water.
- Avoid downed power lines: Downed or live power lines can pose a deadly risk. Always stay at least 10 metres (the length of a school bus) away. Even if they appear inactive, wires that have been down for days may still be live.
- Protect your food: Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to preserve food. Never use charcoal or gas barbecues, camping stoves, or generators indoors—these can create deadly carbon monoxide.
- Know when to go: If your home becomes too cold or too hot during an outage and it's safe to do so, consider relocating to a safer location until power is restored. Take all household members, including pets, with you.
