Non-profit organization We’ve Got This is excited to invite the public to attend its inaugural event, Walk off the Stigma, on Saturday, April 21.

This free, family-friendly event will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Enji Maawnjiding (located at Sault College), and will feature a one-mile walk followed by a feast, gathering, and sharing circle for those interested. The goal of the event is to take a step toward the elimination of the stigma surrounding addictions and mental health disorders.

“It’s great that addictions and mental health have been the topic of more discussion lately, but we really want to kick the conversation up a notch,” said Sara McCleary, co-founder and executive director of We’ve Got This. “We’re hoping that through this event, and others we have planned for the future, we can get some people involved who might not otherwise be a part of that conversation.”

Those taking part in the walk are invited to arrive early to make a sign displaying the disorder they or a loved one might be struggling with, or showing that they’re there simply to learn more or support the community. Materials will be provided.

“I know some people might not feel entirely comfortable laying it all out there, and we won’t hold that against anyone if that’s the case, but feeling free to talk about your struggles is an important part of eliminating the stigma of mental health,” added McCleary. “I think carrying a sign on the walk without shame shows huge strength and can go a long way toward helping others feel comfortable talking about what they’re going through. And that’s what we’re all about.”

We’ve Got This would like to thank the generous support of their partner in this event, the Sault College Native Education Department, for both providing the space and the feast following the walk.

Those interested in supporting We’ve Got This in eliminating the stigma surrounding addictions and mental illness in Sault Ste. Marie are welcome to like the organization on Facebook. Questions can be sent to sara@wgtssm.ca.
