New wildfires start in northeastern Ontario

With six active forest fires now burning, emergency services are urging residents of northeastern Ontario to remain vigilant amid worsening conditions

Timmins has its first forest fire of the season. 

The blaze near Highway 144 is one of three reported in the northeast region today by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). There are six active fires in total.

Timmins 1 is 3.5 kilometres north of Gogama and closed Highway 144 for about an hour this afternoon after it started. The 15-hectare fire is not under control. Three crews are responding to it, and air attacks are underway, said the MNR. 

The other fires that started today are: 

  • Sudbury 7 is located on the north side of Georgian Bay, about two kilometres west of Highway 529. The 0.3-hectare fire is under control.
  • Sudbury 8 is 1.5 kilometres west of Highway 69 and two kilometres north of Giroux Lake. The eight-hectare fire is not under control. Two crews have responded to the fire with air attack operations underway.

Three new wildland fires were confirmed in the Northeast Region today.

  • Sudbury 7 (SUD007) is located on the north side of Georgian Bay, about two kilometres west of Hwy 529. The 0.3-hectare fire is under control.
  • Timmins 1 (TIM001) is located 3.5 kilometres north of Gogagma. The 15-hectare fire is not under control. Three crews have responded to the fire as well as air attack operations are underway this afternoon.
  • Sudbury 8 (SUD008) is located 1.5 kilometres west of Hwy 69 and two kilometres north of Giroux Lake. The eight-hectare fire is not under control. Two crews have responded to the fire with air attack operations underway this afternoon.

There are six active wildland fires in the Northeast Region.

No Drone Zone: Be safe, stay clear of forest fires
Flying drones around forest fires is both dangerous and illegal. When you fly a drone near a forest fire, you can put the lives of pilots, firefighters and other emergency personnel at risk. Be safe, stay clear of forest fires.

Follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations  

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services would like to remind the public to use caution when performing any outdoor burning. In order to dispose of yard waste and woody debris, we encourage you to use methods such as composting or using your local landfill. If you must burn, follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations.  

Fires are to be ignited no sooner than two hours before sunset and are to be extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise. Always have tools/water adequate to contain the fire at the site. Know the rules for safe outdoor burning; consult the full set of Outdoor Burning Regulations.
