Ontario reports 58 deaths, 517 COVID patients in ICUs

Ontario is reporting 517 COVID patients in the province's ICUs, according to the latest update published Feb. 4. 

There are 2,634 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19. Of those, 55 per cent were admitted because of COVID-related illnesses and 45 per cent were admitted for other reasons but test positive for COVID. 

Today's update also includes 58 deaths and 4,047 new cases. Due to testing changes, case counts are underestimated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1047,970 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 998,238 recoveries and 11,711 deaths.

The Feb. 4 updates provided by the province's public health agency and the ministry of health also reported the following data:

Cases

• 58 new deaths that occurred in the last month, and two more deaths that occurred more than a month ago added to the total
• 5,622 recoveries since yesterday's report
• Among the new cases confirmed today are 685 unvaccinated people, 170 partially vaccinated people, and 2,827 fully vaccinated people. 365 cases were reported with vaccination status unknown. 
• The seven-day average incidence rate for cases is 26 cases per 100,000 unvaccinated people, 19.7 cases per 100,000 partially vaccinated people, and 23 cases per 100,000 fully vaccinated people. 
• Lab-confirmed testing is mostly limited to Indigenous people, hospital patients, and those who live or work in high-risk congregate care settings. 

Hospitalizations

• 2,634 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19. Of those, 55 per cent were admitted because of COVID-related illnesses and 45 per cent were admitted for other reasons but test positive for COVID. 
• Among those hospitalized but not in the ICU are 522 unvaccinated people, 111 partially vaccinated people, and 1,332 fully vaccinated people. 
• There are 517 patients in Ontario ICUs with COVID-related illnesses, and 483 of them remain COVID-positive.
• There are 312 COVID patients on ventilators because of COVID-related critical illness
• Among the patients in the ICU are 161 unvaccinated people, 19 partially vaccinated people, and 179 fully vaccinated people.

Vaccination

• About 84 per cent of the population over four years old in Ontario is fully vaccinated (about 11.7 million people)
• More than 6.5 million people in Ontario have had three doses of a COVID vaccine.
• 11 per cent of the eligible population (aged 5 and up) is unvaccinated

Testing

• Provincial labs processed 25,118 tests yesterday resulting in a 12 per cent positivity rate. There are 7,875 tests still being processed.

Northern Ontario

In the north, there are 206 people with COVID-19 in hospital, up from 205 yesterday, according to provincial data. There are 29 people in ICU with the virus, down from 31 yesterday, and 13 people on ventilators, up from 12 yesterday. 

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data for cases and vaccination is:

• Algoma Public Health: The health unit has reported 3,889 cases, 570 known active cases and 19 current hospitalizations. Of the eligible population five years and older, 88 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 83 per cent have both doses. Of the population 18 years and older, 59 per cent have a booster.
• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: The health unit has reported 2,958 cases, 203 known active cases and 11 hospitalizations for COVID. Of the eligible population five years and older, 86 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 81 per cent have both doses. For the eligible population 18 years and older, 57 per cent have a booster.
• Porcupine Health Unit: The health unit has reported 4,420 cases and 385 known active cases. The health unit does not report hospitalizations. At Timmins and District Hospital there are 25 patients with COVID-19, on of whom was admitted for virus-related reasons. Of the eligible population five years and older, 88 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 81 per cent have both doses. For the eligible population 18 years and older, 51 per cent have a booster.
• Public Health Sudbury and Districts: The health unit has reported 9,574 cases and 616 known active cases. It is only updating its numbers Monday, Wednesday and Friday. There are 57 COVID-positive patients at Health Sciences North, including nine in ICU. Of the eligible population five years and older, 88 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 83 per cent have both doses. For the eligible population 18 years and older, 55 per cent have a booster.
• Timiskaming Health Unit: The health unit has reported 1,025 cases, 40 known active cases, and two hospitalizations for the virus, with one person in ICU. Of the eligible population five years and older, 85 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 81 per cent have both doses. For the eligible population 18 years and older, 56 per cent have a booster.
• Northwestern Health Unit: The health unit has reported 3,553 cases and 288 known active cases. Current hospitalizations are not reported. Of the eligible population five years and older, 96 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 87 per cent have both doses. For the eligible population 18 years and older, 59 per cent have a booster.
• Thunder Bay District Health Unit: The health unit has reported 7,138 cases, 317 known active cases and 57 hospitalizations, including eight people in ICU. The health unit is only updating data Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Of the eligible population five years and older, 89 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 83 per cent have both doses. For the eligible population 18 years and older, 56 per cent have a booster.
