The Destination Ontario Airport Welcome program is a collaboration between Ontario post-secondary institutions and several municipalities. Sault College proudly participated in this program from Aug. 12 – Sept. 8, 2019.
As part of this program, staff at the welcome booth greeted international students exiting Customs and Immigration at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport offering a welcome package, assistance with transportation and accommodation, providing free calls home to inform family, and other helpful services.
The program also provided students with an app called iCent that could be accessed prior to arrival, and also offered key information to help students get started in Canada.
By providing a warm welcome and guidance to new students arriving in Canada, the Destination Ontario partnership aims to attract and retain more international students, and enhance the profile of Ontario’s cities as highly desirable international learning destinations in Canada.
In total for the province the booth served approximately 2,700 students in a three week period beginning Aug. 12 until Sept. 8, 2019.
“Sault College, along with twenty other Colleges, participated in this project and we hope to see these numbers grow as the awareness of this program is branded and promoted in future semesters. These students are travelling half-way around the world to come to the Sault and this is a great way to welcome them to Canada for their studies,” says, Laurie Burrows Director Enrolment and Financial Services, Sault College.
For the 2020 winter semester, the college will be part of the Destination Ontario Airport Welcome program again in Toronto from Dec. 23, 2019 to Jan. 12, 2020.
