City solicitor Karen Fields speaks to city council during a special meeting held Nov. 18, 2024.

City solicitor Karen Fields is hanging up her shingle, city councillors will be told on Monday.

"Karen Fields has provided the city with her intent to withdraw from the practice of law and conclude her employment with the city as of June 27, 2025," Tom Vair, the city's chief administrative officer, says in a report to Mayor Matthew Shoemaker and ward councillors.

"Ms. Fields will be greatly missed by the organization, and staff are grateful for her valuable counsel and contributions to the city during her tenure with the city," Vair says.

City council will be asked on Monday to authorize an open recruitment process, including internal and external postings, to seek a replacement for Fields.

Recruiting will be led by city staff with no involvement by external recruitment consultants.

"Advertising and promotion of the vacancy will be undertaken in appropriate media publications," Vair says.
