Freezing rain warning issued for:
Sault Ste. Marie - St. Joseph Island, Ont.
Greater Sudbury and vicinity, Ont.
North Bay - West Nipissing, Ont.
Blind River - Thessalon, Ont.
Espanola - Killarney, Ont.
Current details:
Significant ice build-up due to freezing rain Sunday.
What:
Freezing rain with significant ice accretion of 5 to 15 mm.
Snowfall amounts up to 10 cm, particularly for locations north of Highway 17.
Icy and slippery conditions.
Utility outages and tree damage.
When:
Late overnight or early Sunday morning through early Monday morning.
Additional information:
Precipitation may begin as snow or ice pellets before changing to freezing rain late overnight or early Sunday morning. Freezing rain may briefly change over to rain Sunday afternoon into Sunday night for locations near the North Channel. Precipitation will transition to ice pellets and then snow from west to east Monday morning.
Easterly to northeasterly winds will become northerly with gusts up to 50 km/h on Monday morning. This may exacerbate the situation if there is ice build-up on tree limbs and power lines.
Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and extremely hazardous.
Slow down driving in slippery conditions. Watch for taillights ahead and maintain a safe following distance. Beware of branches or electrical wires that could break under the weight of ice.
