As part of their In-Service Smoke and CO Alarm Program, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services will begin going door-to-door to spread awareness about fire safety in the community.
The program officially starts on May 20 with firefighters visiting residences beginning at 6 p.m. with a Monday to Thursday schedule in place.
“The purpose of the program is to spread awareness and answer any questions citizens may have about fire safety.” said public education officer Aaron Gravelle. “Invite them into your home. We are not writing ticket violations, we just want everyone to be safe and aware of the protections systems they have or should have in their homes.”
The firefighters will offer fire safety information with awareness pamphlets, discussions about alarms, home escape plans, as well as offer to test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the home. As part of the testing, firefighters will be checking the date on the back of the alarms to ensure they have not expired.
The program will run from May 20 until Sept. 25 and will be followed by the start of Fire Prevention Week on Oct. 5, 2025.
