The City of Sault Ste. Marie in partnership with Algoma University, is pleased to announce yet another way to stay active this winter season. Now open, a 2.25-kilometer cross-country ski trail that loops through Snowden Park and Algoma University green spaces.
“This partnership with the City of Sault Ste. Marie allows us all to enjoy these cross country ski trails. It’s a great way for our students and the public to exercise and enjoy our Northern Ontario winter,” said Dave Trudelle, Director of Student Experience, Algoma University.
Algoma University prepares and grooms the entire trail that loops through the campus and Snowden Park. Walkers in the area are asked to obey signage and respect the groomed trails.
“We are excited to partner with Algoma University to provide this free cross country trail in our community conveniently located within city limits. From the beginner to the most advanced skier, this trail appeals to all levels and abilities," said Virginia McLeod, manager of recreation and culture, City of Sault Ste. Marie.
"The distance that is groomed using both properties makes for a very inviting cross country ski option for students and the community. There’s a natural beauty that exists within this trail and we are happy to offer this to our community.”
In addition to the cross country ski trail, the city offers a number of outdoor skating rinks and ice pads this winter including Anna McCrea, Merrifield and Esposito rinks, Art Jennings Speed Skating Oval and the newly developed Clergue Park Skating Trail along the St. Marys River.
