If you aren’t up to date on your vaccinations, you could face a steep suspension if you’re a high school student.

Algoma Public Health issued 549 suspension orders to high school students across the region this April, with 140 students ultimately facing suspension for failing to keep their immunizations up to date.

The suspensions can last as long as 20 days.

Algoma Public Health issued letters to parents and guardians of the region’s high school students in January – and again this spring. The newest letters include a suspension order and also provide time for students to get their immunizations up to date.

“The suspension notices help ensure students are up to date with required immunizations by providing parents and guardians ample time to address any outstanding vaccination needs,” said Candice Carter, manager of the immunization program.

“The notices act as a reminder and a call to action, promoting families to contact their health-care provider and book immunization appointments.”

Carter said students are not suspended if Algoma Public Health is informed of a plan for immunization, “even if the appointment is scheduled after the suspension date.”
