The northbound lane of North Street is temporarily closed for part of this afternoon as a crew is removing an underground oil tank that was the suspected source of spill.
Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks staff were on hand Tuesday for the lifting of the oil tank from the Canadian Pacific Kansas City rail yard adjacent to North Street on to a flatbed truck. The rusting tank had a gaping hole in one side.
Traffic was limited to one lane during the removal process, with workers at each end directing vehicles.
In November, an oily sheen was observed on the water of the creek that runs between the Gateway Casino Sault Ste. Marie and its nearby parking lot. An absorbant boom was placed to prevent the substance from travelling further into the St. Marys River.
That absorbant boom was still onsite as of May 21. No environmental charges related to the spill have been announced by the ministry.
