Sheila Purvis has never sought the spotlight, but her quiet leadership, visionary entrepreneurship and deep commitment to community have made her a positive force of change in Sault Ste. Marie.
“I’ve never done any of this for recognition,” said Purvis. “Everything I do is for the betterment of Sault Ste. Marie.”
“I love where I live and this is my way of giving back,” she added.
This year, her efforts have been recognized with the prestigious Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce President’s Award.
“It’s quite emotional and truly humbling to be recognized with this award,” Purvis shared.
Presented annually since 1982, the President’s Award honours individuals or organizations who go above and beyond in advancing business and community development.
This year’s recipient was chosen by the Chamber’s Past Immediate President for her remarkable contributions to the city’s economic, cultural and civic landscape.
A lifelong advocate for Sault Ste. Marie, Purvis has spent decades breathing new life into the city’s waterfront and tourism industry.
As the driving force behind Purvis Marine Ltd., the Sault Multimodal Terminal, BeaverTails and Sault Lock Tours, she has not only re-imagined the visitor experience but also created meaningful opportunities for growth in transportation and hospitality.
Purvis is a dedicated civic leader, having served with the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Development Corporation and the John R. Rhodes Scholarship Committee.
Whether mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs or contributing her expertise in boardrooms, she brings both humility and resolve to everything she does.
Through her work, Purvis has helped create jobs, foster innovation and redefine what’s possible for Sault Ste. Marie.
“Every day is special,” Purvis shared. “We have some exciting things coming up and when the right opportunities arise, we’re always open to taking them on.”
Her legacy is etched not only in the businesses she’s built but also in the community she’s helped shape.
