There was a “significant increase” in sexual violence incidents at Algoma University last year, but university staff say the hike is likely due to improved reporting mechanisms and awareness efforts.

Incidents rose from three total in the 2022-23 school year to 15 in 2023-2024, with on-campus incidents spiking from one in 2022-2023 to 11 last year, according to the university’s sexual violence annual report.

“The increase in reporting does not necessarily mean that there is an increase in the incident rate. Although we can't definitively say, but it may, in fact, be viewed as a positive outcome of our increased education and awareness efforts,” said Lauri Green, chief human resources officer, at Monday’s board of governors meeting.

The university has hosted various workshops on consent, healthy relationships, gender equity, and more, as well as hosting training sessions for staff and students, and “building trust” in the university’s reporting mechanisms, Green said.

“We've addressed these risks through increased awareness campaigns, building of trust in reporting and response mechanisms and establishment of best practices,” she said.
