An affordable housing project near the intersection of Second Line and Goulais Avenue topped Sault Ste. Marie's building permit list for the month of August.
First announced by SooToday's Kenneth Armstrong three months ago, the $5.1-million, 11-unit, two-storey apartment building will be next door to a strip mall containing Misty's Fifties Bar and Grill.
When completed by Ruscio Masonry and Construction, the project will be comprised of three one-bedroom units, four two-bedroom units and four three-bedroom units.
It's expected to be finished by April 2025.
The city issued 110 building permits in August, valued at a total of $12.2 million, $9.8 million of which was residential.
Five of the seven biggest building permits in August were for housing starts.
So far in 2024, the city has issued 794 permits valued at $143 million, compared to 833 permits worth $122 million at the same time last year.
Permits issued in August also included a $1-million project at 873 Second Line East involving two buildings for personal storage unit rentals.
