Algoma, Sault College basketball teams back in action

Both schools were on the road for games to open up their post-Christmas schedules

With the new semesters underway at both schools, the basketball teams at Algoma University and Sault College were back in action with weekend games on the road.

In Ontario University Athletics basketball action, Algoma’s women’s and men’s teams were in action at home on Friday night against Lakehead at the George Leach Centre.

In the women’s game, Sofia Lluch had 23 points, six assists and seven rebounds as Lakehead beat Algoma 84-45.

Lily Gruber-Schulz added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Lakehead.

In the men’s game, a push in the second half lifted Lakehead to an 87-62 win.

Lakehead led by just three at the half.

Isaiah Traylor led Lakehead with 22 points and eight rebounds while Laoui Msambya and Alston Harris chipped in with 14 points each.

Vincent Farardeau led Algoma with 13 points. Maxime Bellony and Nicholas Gehlen added 12 points each.

The Algoma teams return to action on Jan. 24 on the road against Laurier.

Sault College returned to action in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association basketball play over the weekend with road games against Redeemer.

On Friday night, the Sault College women dropped a 95-43 decision in the trip opener.

Emma Filion led Sault College with 12 points and 13 rebounds in the game. Clara Yanchuk added 12 points for Sault College.

Jessica Angelini led Redeemer with 32 points. Tobie Brinkman chipped in with 21 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

The Redeemer women capped off the weekend sweep with a 90-56 win on Saturday,

Yanchuk led Sault College with 17 points while Skylar Toms had 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Filion chipped in with 14 points for Sault College.

Angelini led Redeemer with 24 points while Brinkman had 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Lucy Brinkman had 18 rebounds for Redeemer, leading all players in the game.

Griffin Lack-Shane also had 11 rebounds and dished out 11 assists for Redeemer.

In Friday’s men’s game, Spencer Kerssies had 21 points and 15 rebounds to lead Redeemer to a 109-65 win over Sault College.

Elijah Lostracco and Goran Vaselinovic had 15 points each for Redeemer.

Jaylyne Moore-Tucker led Sault College with 19 points. Kevon Clarke chipped in with 15.

On Saturday, Lostracco had 17 points as Redeemer ended the weekend with a 99-79 win.

Jacobus Vanderpol added 16 points for Redeemer.

Simon Wal led Sault College with 30 points while Clarke had 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Both Sault College teams are back in action on Jan. 25 with home games against Sheridan College.
