The Sault Ste. Marie Aquatic Club captured the team championship in both the A and B categories at its home meet, the Joey Calzone's Invitational, at the John Rhodes Community Centre pool last weekend.

The victories marked the eighth straight occassion the team has won the A (pre-provincial) category and the second consecutive B (developmental) division title.

SSMAC finished one of the city's top swim meets ahead of the Sudbury Laurentian Swimm Club in both categories.

More than 320 swimmers participated from across the region and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Included with host SSMAC and the local Soo Y Dolphins were teams from Sudbury, Kapuskasing, Valley East, North Bay, Sturgeon Falls, Hearst, Elliot Lake, the Michigan Sault, Rudyard, Marquette, and Escanaba.

Several Sault Ste. Marie Special Olympians also participated. High point trophies in the A division for the home team were collected by Shannon Hazelton in the girls 15-and-over group, Becky Day in the girls 11-12 group, and Kyle Matthews in the boys 12-13 division.

In B competition, Adam Filek in boys 11-and-under and Carrie-Lynne Smale in girls 10-and-under captured top honours.

"We had outstanding results on both sides of the meet," says SSMAC Head Coach Rob Moreside. "I was particularly pleased with how our newer swimmers performed. We had many, many best times and we're looking good for championship and tour team events.

"Our coaching staff prepared the swimmers well and team members did a great job of getting ready for the meet themselves. Our team really came together for this event, particularly on Friday night when all the swimmers from every club were on deck."

Other top performers for SSMAC included Brian Lee, Jeff Byrne, Patrick Bonne, Sarah Theodossiou, Wendy Oliskew, Samantha Filek and Alexandra Tracy.
