Jeff Carter stepped up and scored two goals to lead the Soo Greyhounds to a 3-0 victory over the Saginaw Spirit on Friday night.

The win vaults the Hounds over the .500 mark to 24-23-7-1 and keeps the team in a tie with the Plymouth Whalers and Windsor Spitfires for first place in the Ontario Hockey League west division with 56 points each.

The win also sets up a first place showdown between the Greyhounds and Whalers in Plymouth on Saturday night.

The Whalers picked up a 3-1 victory over Guelph on Friday night while the Spitfires beat the Kitchener Rangers 3-2. On Thursday, Windsor, who have played two more games than the Hounds and Whalers, defeated the Sarnia Sting 3-1.

In Saginaw, Carter opened the scoring at 7:15 of the first period on the power play before Martin Tuma added another later in the frame. Carter capped the scoring with an early second period goal.

Brody Todd assisted on both Carter goals while Tyler Kennedy's points streak has ended after 10 consecutive games with a point.

Kyle Gajewski posted his third shutout of the season in net for the Hounds while former Hound Jeff Weber took the loss for Saginaw.

The Hounds conclude their road trip on Sunday in Sarnia before returning home to begin a home stand on Wednesday night against Sarnia at 7 p.m.
