FROM WILD TO LEAFS

Former Greyhound first-rounder Aaron Gavey has signed a free agent contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 28-year old Gavey, who played on the Hounds' Memorial Cup championship team of 1993, scored six goals as a checking centre with the Minnesota Wild last season. Toronto will be the fifth National Hockey League stop for Gavey. Besides Minnesota, he has also played for the Tampa Bay Lightning, Calgary Flames and Dallas Stars. Gavey, who signed a three-year contract with the Leafs, will be one of three former Greyhounds at Toronto's training camp, which opens in early September. The others are defencemen Richard Jackman and Marc Moro. Ironically, as Gavey is a new Leaf, so are Jackman and Moro. Jackman, a former Dallas first-rounder, was acquired by the Maple Leafs this past spring in a trade with the Boston Bruins. Moro was obtained by the Maple Leafs late last season from the Nashville Predators' organization and finished the 2001-02 campaign with Toronto's American Hockey League affiliate at St. John.
