The latest Grand Slam of Curling event, the Canadian Open, is underway and Brad Jacobs is off to a solid start in the six-day event, going on this week in Yorkton, Sask.
The Jacobs rink, which includes third Marc Kennedy, second E.J. Harnden, and lead Ryan Harnden, picked up a pair of wins to open the tournament and one more win would clinch a playoff spot for the team in the triple knockout event.
On Tuesday night Jacobs picked up a 7-5 win over Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont.
Jacobs picked up the win with a pair in the eighth end after Howard tied the game at five with a pair of his own in the seventh end.
Howard took the lead early with a pair in the opening end.
Jacobs would score three in the second end before taking a 4-2 lead with a steal of one in the fourth end.
Howard cut the Jacobs lead to one with a single in the fifth end.
Jacobs took a 5-3 lead in the sixth before Howard tied it one end later.
On Wednesday, Jacobs would advance to the A Bracket final with a 7-3 win over Yannick Schwaller of Bern, Switzerland.
With the hammer to start, Jacobs took the lead with a pair in the second end.
The Sault rink proceeded to take a 4-0 lead with a steal of two in the third.
Schwaller got on the board with a single in the fourth.
The Swiss rink proceeded to cut the lead to one thanks to a pair of single steals in the subsequent two ends.
Jacobs sealed the win with three in the seventh end.
The Jacobs rink returns to action on Thursday at 1 p.m. Sault time against American Korey Dropkin.
The Canadian Open features a triple knockout format sees all 16 men’s teams begin in the A Bracket. Teams remain in the bracket until they lose. One loss drops teams to the B Bracket and a second loss drops teams to the C Bracket with a third loss eliminating teams from the event.
The eight remaining teams move on to the playoff round, which begins on Saturday.
