As is the case in any type of championship competition, goaltending will be a key for the Soo North Stars as they get ready for the Air Canada Cup national AAA midget hockey playdowns which begin Monday at Memorial Gardens. To be sure, Michael Maulucci has shown that he can provide quality netminding for the North Stars. The 16-year old rookie posted the best totals among goalies in the Great North Midget Hockey League this season, playing in 25 games with a 2.38 goals-against-average and six shutouts. Maulucci then played in all 11 North Star playoff games and will get the call to start the Air Canada Cup championship series. Game one for the North Stars is Monday at 8 p.m. Maulucci said he likes the heavy workload, even with the prospect of playing every day at this week's national midget showcase. "It's a lot about mental preparation, your own confidence, and the confidence of the coach and your teammates," said the 5-foot-10, 160 lb. puckstopper, who aspires to play in the Ontario Hockey League. Maulucci was bypassed by the OHL at last year's draft but said he has heard from a few teams this year. "It's what I want to do, have a chance to play in the OHL," said Maulucci. "Hopefully I've impressed the scouts this season. The North Stars have been icing competitive teams in the Great North loop for a long time and this is their third appearance at the Air Canada Cup in the past 10 years.
