Sault College hockey swept, Algoma soccer wraps up

Sault College dropped a pair of games against Trine while the Algoma soccer teams concluded regular season action on the road

The Sault College men’s hockey team was in action at home with a pair of games over the weekend.

In American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) action, Sault College dropped a pair of games locally against Trine University.

On Friday night, with the Cougars leading 3-1, Trine scored five unanswered goals en route to a 6-3 win.

After Dante Suffredini opened the scoring for Trine midway through the opening period, Ryan Vendramin scored a pair of goals to give Sault College the lead.

A goal by Austin Rowe at 15:12 of the second period made it 3-1 but Trine cut into the lead 1:36 later on a goal by Christian Karbler.

Stanley Iatczak would give Trine the lead as he scored a pair of goals eight seconds apart late in the second period.

Goals by Joseph Laskero and Dakota Davis in the third period sealed the win.

On Saturday, Trine completed the weekend sweep with a 6-4 win.

The teams traded goals in the opening period before Sault College took a 2-1 lead as Rowe scored in the opening minute of the second period.

Goals by Cody Dombrowski and Dillon Fox 24 seconds apart gave Trine a 3-2 lead.

Trine went up 5-2 thanks to goals by Nicholas Ludeman and Dakota Davis before Bryceton Lalonde scored late in the period for Sault College.

Kaidan McDonald scored for Sault College in the third to make the score 5-4 but Laskero sealed the win, scoring with 1:13 to go in regulation time.

Iatczak had the other goal for Trine while Tanner Mayne also scored for Sault College.

The losses drop Sault College’s record in ACHA action to 7-2-1.

In Ontario Colleges Athletic Association basketball action over the weekend, the Sault College men picked up a 66-65 overtime win over Canadore.

Simon Wal led Sault College with 32 points, which included five three-pointers.

John Clark led Canadore with 19 points.

The women’s basketball team opens action on Oct. 26 at Lambton.

Next action for the men’s team will be at Lambton as well on Oct. 26.

Sault College returns to action on Oct. 26 in the opening game of a two-game weekend set at home against Oakland University.

In Ontario University Athletics soccer action, Algoma University was on the road for games against Laurier over the weekend.

On Friday, the Algoma women’s team dropped a 2-0 decision. Natalie Barry amd Mackenzie D’Andrade scored for Laurier in the win.

Friday’s men’s game saw Laurier beat Algoma 5-0 on the strength of a three-goal performance by Jeroni Mestres. Antonio Hecimovic and Anthony DeSousa also scored for Laurier.

In Saturday’s women’s game, Laurier opened up a 3-0 lead in the first half and beat Algoma 4-1.

Jenna Crombie had the lone goal for Algoma.

D’Andrade. Hope Windebank, Emily Tamburro, and Mimi Gratton scored for Laurier.

In Saturday’s men’s game, second half goals by Nick Andreola and Liam Chong Tai led Laurier to a 2-0 win over Algoma.
