Solomon top local in first round

Three other locals in Michael Sharp, Adam Combs and Andrew Harrison were also chosen along with Solomon from the Soo North Stars roster.

Solomon, a Garden River First Nation product, was chosen 17th overall after a stellar minor hockey career in Sault Ste. Marie, where he had been projected as a high round OHL pick for the past two years.

This past season, Solomon, who stands at six-foot-two and 170 pounds, showcased his talents with the North Stars and led the club to the Great North Midget League championship series and into the Air Canada Cup championship as host last week.

The defenseman scored a goal and 14 assists in 33 games while racking up 127 penalty minutes during the regular season.

Solomon is a tough, strong defenseman who clears the front of the net effectively and possess offensive skills. Solomon is a strong skater with a hard shot from the point.

Joining Solomon in Sarnia is Sharp, who was selected by the Sting in the sixth round. The six-foot, 160 pound centre scored 15 goals and 33 points in 35 games last season.

Combs was selected in the 12th round by the Mississauga Ice Dogs. A small but tough and solid winger, Combs scored 21 goals and added 14 assists to go with 109 penalty minutes.

Andrew Harrison was the final local selected in the draft by the Sudbury Wolves in the 13th round. The six-foot and 170 pound winger scored six goals and 13 points in 12 games with North Stars.
