This past weekend the Soo Sports Mosquito Selects went 4-2 and captured the Consolation Championship in the Byron Optimist baseball tournament in London, Ontario. The Soo team reeled off 3 straight wins on Sunday, finally defeating Welland 15-4 in the Consolation final. Christopher Buonomo was the winning pitcher in the game, throwing the full 6 innings and striking out 7.
Offensively, the Soo was paced by Lucas Watson with 3 singles and 3 RBI's, and D.J. Carter, with 2 singles, a double and a triple.
Earlier in the day, the Soo team defeated Woodstock 13-7 in the consolation quarter-finals. Lucas Watson got the win in relief of Corey Jackson, who struck out 6 in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Again the Soo's offensive attack was led by Watson, with 2 singles and a triple, while Brett Findlay added a double and a triple, Shawn Creedon had 2 singles, a double, and 4 RBI's, and Jarrett Krancevich had an inside-the-park home run.
This win vaulted the Soo team into the Consolation semi-finals, where they handled Niagara Falls 23-4. Shawn Creedon got the win, but the story here was the 27 hit performance over 4 innings by the Soo team. Buonomo and Jackson each had 4 hits, knocking in 5 and 4 runs respectively, while Watson chipped in with 3 hits and 5 RBI's. D.J. Carter also had an inside-the-park home run, and Brett Findlay had 2 singles and a triple.
Earlier in the tournament, on Friday night, the Soo defeated Ajax, the eventual runner-up in the tournament, 14-10. Statistics are unavailable for this game. On Saturday, the Soo took an 11-0 loss to the eventual tournament champions, Eager Beaver from London. Shawn Creedon was the lone bright spot in the game, going 3 strong innings on the mound and collecting the only Soo hit of the day.
Later on Saturday, a tired Soo team was beaten 11-10 by Vaughan. Findlay and Creedon led the offense against Vaughan, collecting each a single and a double.
