The Soo Blitz Senior Rec women's team captured the championship at the Bruce Mines/Wildcats Hockey Tournament on the weekend. The Blitz defeated Central Driving Academy of Garden River 2-1 in a thrilling overtime final.

The Blitz defeated Central Driving Academy of Garden River 2-1 in a thrilling overtime final. Patti Lutz scored the winning goal unassisted with 39 seconds remaining in the third period of overtime. Patti Storozuk had the other Soo Blitz goal while Maret Kaldma had an assist. Joanne Pine scored Central Driving Academy's only goal unassisted.

The loss was the only one of the tournament for Central Driving Academy, which finished first after preliminary action. In an earlier game, they defeated the Blitz 1-0. They also had a 4-2 win against Source for Sports, a 7-1 trouncing over Blind River and a 3-2 win over Elliot Lake. Soo Blitz bounced back from their opening 1-0 loss to defeat Elliot Lake 3-0 (shut out to Carolyn Tomchuk). They thumped Blind River 6-1 and scored a 4-2 win over Source For Sports.

The inaugural Bruce Mines/Wildcats tournament is a joint effort of the Bruce Mines Recreational Committee and the Sault Senior Wildcats women's hockey team. --

The final regular season games were played in Bruce Mines Monday night resulting in a slight change in league standings by two of the six teams.

A dramatic win by Lafarge combined with an Algoma Insurance loss moved Lafarge past Algoma into fourth position in final league standings. Playoffs begin next week in Bruce Mines and then move to John Rhodes and Memorial Gardens for the final two Monday nights.

In last night's action Lafarge's Sylvie Menard scored the winning goal from Sue Chiblow with only ten seconds remaining in the game to defeat Crawford's Canines 6-5. Lafarge had a 5-2 lead but the tenacious Canines score three unanswered goals to tie the game with four minutes left in the third.

Other goal scorers for Lafarge were Brenda Swystun with two and one assist, Elaine Angelic with two goals and Chiblow, who also added a second assist. Doreen Shaw, Julie Laroque and Trish Evans also had one assist each.

Scoring for Crawford's were Donna May Sayers-Lariviere with two goals and one assist, Lisa Venier with two goals and Laurie Laudadio with a goal and an assist. Penny Souliere also had one assist.

Play It Again Sports finished their regular season with a tie against Investors Group. Gayle Trivers scored twice to put Play It Again up 2-1 heading into the third, but Investors Michelle Dillenbeck netted her first goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2 early in the final frame. Cassidy Boudreau had the other Investors goal.

Source For Sports held on to first place with a convincing 6-1 win over Algoma Insurance. Barb Willoughby had a hattrick and added one assist, while Heidi Frech scored twice and had one assist. Pick up player Cassidy Boudreau had the other goal and one assist. Jennie Pearce and Amber Lahti also had one assist each. Scoring the loan goal for Algoma was Mona Jones.
