WP GIRLS WIN HOOPS TIEBREAKER

Finally, after two days of tiebreakers, the final playoff spot in the senior division of the local girls high school basketball league has been decided. Ali Bodnar sunk a free throw with seven seconds left on the clock to lift the White Pines Wolverines to a frantic 43-42 win over the Mount St. Joseph Royals on Tuesday night. The dramatic win gives White Pines the fourth-and-final playoff spot in the senior division. White Pines, the Mount and the Korah Colts had ended the regular-season schedule tied for fourth with identical 4-8 records. In the first tiebreaker, played Monday, the Mount beat Korah 50-39 to advance to Tuesday's game against White Pines. It was another do-or-die win for White Pines, which last week, in its last game of the regular season, defeated the Mount 37-30 to force the three-way tiebreaker. In Tuesday's game, Amanda Evans led the Wolverines with 20 points, Katie Healey added 10 and Laura Sharp added seven -- including five clutch fourth-quarter points before fouling out -- to set the stage for Bodnar's last-second heroics. Jessica Stone with 12 points and Kerri Ostroski with 10 led the Mount. Mount scoring star Julia Colizza was held to just four points as Wolverines' defender Shannon House turned in an outstanding performance away from the ball. With the win, White Pines plays unbeaten St. Basil Saints (12-0) in one senior semi final on Thursday. Sir James Dunn (5-7) is at St. Mary's (10-2) in the other semi.
