A fisherman is never afraid of a storm because he weathered one before”.

In his home and with loving family by his side, Jim passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Soul mate and beloved partner of Lili who will forever miss her “Jimventures”. Supportive role model and greatest father figure to Leo and Jessica along with many others. Jim was a son to the late Russel and late Eleanor (nee Sanftenberg) Vance and a brother to the late Judy Landriault (Brad), Brian (Linda) and Rhonda (Gord). Fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews and many many friends. In addition to his immediate family, Jim was present and involved in the lives of others, always setting a great example through his actions. He demonstrated wisdom, strength and inspired those around him to be better.

Jim never backed down from a challenge or an adventure. He weathered many storms with grit and determination and displayed an incredible amount of strength and resilience throughout his life. He created many great memories with family and friends that will surely never be forgotten.

Jim was born and raised in Spanish and comes from a long line of Great Lakes commercial fishermen. He amazingly captained the Ark and the Midnight Charter. He loved hunting, fishing, prospecting, camping and being with family and friends. He was also a local businessman running Vance’s Motor Inn.

He played an integral role in the community promoting tourism in the area. He was involved in building the local snowmobile trails and bridges, and other such endeavours all the while tending to his motel and fishing businesses.

Jim was very accepting and supportive of those around him. He shared his life and world with his soul mate Lili, her children and grandchildren. Their life was filled with laughter, love and the kind of memories that last a lifetime. Affectionately known as “Jimpa” to his grandchildren and “Jimmy” to his great grandchild, Jim was a beloved role model who provided unconditional love and guidance.

We will forever miss the wood chips all over the house, his hearty “Hello” when he walked in the door and his patience in every situation.

To Jim, we raise a glass….“Fair winds and following seas”.

Lili wishes to thank family and friends who supported her, Jim and his family during this difficult time.

Jim knew how to throw a party and did not want to miss his. A living celebration of his life was already held on Saturday, January 18th, 2025, at the Spanish Legion. He was overjoyed with the celebration.
