Should the province take a regional approach to the lockdown?

Poll |

The main drawback I see to regional lockdowns is that people will go where the restrictions are less. In our case, we'd have people from red zoned Ottawa and Southern Ontario coming here just to shop and carry on with their usual pleasures, to the detriment of everyone else. Unless they want to also start enforcing regional borders for travelers, this will remain an issue.

What is your favourite local FM Radio station?

I can't stand radio. Too many ads, and too much music I don't like on our local stations, or to put in less negative terms, there aren't local stations consistently playing music I like.

JBF - pretty sure that translates to "I don't listen to FM radio" which is an answer on the poll, in case you needed to review the question.

A 1% raise isn't 'cost of living' - it won't even keep pace with inflation. 2% sometimes does and sometimes does not, but is far more reasonable. Meanwhile, the government voted themselves a 14% raise. Think about that for a sec.

Maybe every time the politicians want a raise it should be put to a referendum, rather than giving them carte blanche to vote themselves wealthier every couple years.

Do you think university/college textbooks should be free?

Poll |

Free is pushing it, unless we're going to a tuition-less system, in which case it's just changing who picks up the tab.

That said, having been to college, and having to re-take a couple courses... the textbooks were different, even though the subject hadn't substantially changed (or at all) in that year. The publishers revise them just to make them incompatible with previous years books, to cut out the secondary market of former students selling old books to new students. It's almost predatory.

Big Brother
Christmas is only about Christ in name. The church would like it to be so, but it was a ripped off pagan holiday that was adopted as Christianity absorbed other cultural traditions during its spread. Now, of course, it is mostly about capitalism and an excess of spending.

Further, although "officially secular" we do not have the separation of church and state embedded in our founding documents like they do in the US (and even a cursory glance south of the border will show you all the good that does).

Though I agree in principle that we should not be using government property to endorse particular even quasi religious holidays, unless that can apply equally to all, I doubt that argument would get us very far locally.

I doubt that speed bumps will do much. Just look at Biggings Ave. The street is worse than some logging roads I've been on and people continue to use it to rip between Queen and Wellington at 80km/h. Lowering the speed limit has done nothing. Trucks and SUVs will soak up any bumps you put down like they're not even there.

I believe the internet approved term for that is "ugga-dugga" but I otherwise agree ;)

Lots of shade trees and good insulation mean it's only unbearable for a week or two in July. I'll live.

Sneaky wording in contracts represents the thin edge of the wedge, allowing employers to subvert the intent of the agreement to exploit workers for their own gain or that of their business without appropriate compensation. Sounds like this one was opening the door to avoiding overtime pay. Definitely not good.
