One other thing to bear in mind: most of the rail line from the Sault to Sudbury is Class 2 track, meaning passenger trains are limited to 30 mph (50 km/h). The ACR is somewhat better, at 40 mph. Trains are much more reliable than highways in winter weather, but significant money needs to be spent on upgrading the rail infrastructure before journey times can compete with going by car.

One of the big challenges with long distance transit in the North is the lack of good local transit options at your destination. Why would you take a train if you're going to need a car when you get there anyway?
I really hope to see the return of passenger rail service both north and east of the Sault, but it really needs to be addressed as a comprehensive approach to travel in the North, and not a piecemeal one-off thing.

Mississauga First Nation is just outside of Blind River; you pass through it when you're driving along Highway 17. It's inside the boundaries of the federal riding of Sault Ste Marie—Algoma.

A big chunk of gas tax revenue goes towards highway maintenance: plowing roads in winter, resurfacing them in summer.
Does anybody from the north really think that our highways are in such good shape that they need *less* work, not more?

If you don't want to share your vaccination status, that's absolutely your right. And you can exercise that right by staying at home where you can't infect anybody else.

Yeah, the next thing you know, you'll have to be vaccinated against tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, & whooping cough just to go to school. Oh wait, you already do.

Folks who were planning to vote Green or Independent might want to consider the other options. No Green or Independent candidate has filed nomination papers for the riding of Sault Ste Marie, and the deadline was this past Monday.

There used to be a Smoke's Poutinerie in the place next to Top Hat (now occupied by Low & Slow, previously J Caroline's), but they apparently couldn't make a go of it and closed. Not sure why; this town definitely loves its poutine. And don't get me wrong, I love this town's italian restaurants and adore my Italian neighbours, but we could definitely use more variety; it's been lacking for a long time.

Exactly this. I would choose any one of these over any of the poll options:
* a ramen place (Japanese noodles)
* an izakaya (Japanese pub)
* Turkish
* Greek
* Bulgarian
* Ethiopian (yes seriously, it's amazing)
* Montreal-style bagels
* German Brauhaus
* a proper Mexican place (not just burritos / tacos)
Also an Asado place (Brazilian Steakhouse), Mongolian Grill, or Korean BBQ place would probably go over really well with a lot of folks.

I basically disagree with this guy's positions on everything, but he came out to events, talked with people, debated other candidates, and laid out his ideas for what should change and why. It's commendable when someone not only puts themselves forward as a candidate, but also puts in the work required to do a proper job of it.
