Hoping the best for all affected communities and the firefighters fighting for them... and hoping that Sault Ste. Marie won't have to face any nearby fires this year. Very sad :(

Regarding both Moedog and The Watcher, you are arguing over a non-issue. The USA has a population of over 300 000 000 people. There are 50 000 coal miners in the US. That is roughly 0.01% of the US population. It is not an important industry or a large employer. As an industry, it has been declining for almost a hundred years.

The optics surrounding coal is something that is uniquely beneficial in US politics, as industry has changed, and many communities feel that this has led to decreasing prosperity.

In the us, the constant talk of coal is a useful political narrative. In Canada though, there's no point to participate. Coal is not a significant industry in terms of modern day relevant or a significant source of jobs.

Back on topic though, why should Canada not charge for its resources?

HoundsFanatic - Yes, Chippewa County, Michigan (which Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan is a part of), has voted Republican for over 20 years. In the last election in particular, they voted Republican by the largest margin since 1996. So I agree - don't feel too bad.

This is very much what they voted for.

I don't think it's dumb to still buy American made products. We can't entirely boycott the USA. If you want to help Canada as an individual, you can 'be better' - go out of your way to buy Canadian brands and products. That strengthens Canadian business.

The Watcher, and that is sad, but there is no logical or humane reason that other people should have to suffer simply because there is suffering in the world.

It was a wonderful place. In the past few years, a lot of new businesses have opened in the Sault. Makes me feel optimistic for the community - even as this one closes, the owners plan to open a new business soon :)
