Between low visibility yesterday and slick conditions today, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and other emergency services have been keeping busy responding to collisions, says traffic Sgt. Ray Magnan.
"It's been steady, but we are managing," said Magnan in a phone interview on Monday.
On Sunday blowing snow caused low visibility and the closure of Hwy 17 N.
“It’s a little better than it was yesterday, but it is still a concern,” said Magnan of occasional visibility issues.
All of that snow that came down since yesterday has caused another issue, said Magnan.
“The combination of a large amount of snow and the minus 20 cold out there produces that packed, very slick snow," he said. “The packed snow is pretty slick."
That has especially been an issue at intersections.
“We have had a couple of accidents in regards to slippery conditions at the intersections that are glazed over and cars are sliding," said Magnan.
Some of the less-often used side roads have the opposite problem, with drivers having to deal with softer snow.
“I think the side roads aren’t as passable as the main roads, so vehicles are getting stuck as I understand," said Magnan.
In at least one case a red light was obscured by snow that had stuck to the fixture.
"Drivers need to use more caution," said Magnan. “If you’re not sure what the light is, come to a complete stop and just make sure it’s not a red light they are facing."
As of 2:30 p.m. Magnan was aware of two collisions involving city buses.
“That is more than normal," he said.
Magnan recommends that drivers take their time and drive defensively.
“The visibility is better right now, but give yourself more time and use more caution," he said.
