The Stitches from the Heart Quilt Guild helped out Santa Clause this year by dropping off a hand-made gift for every resident of Extendicare Mapleview.

Alison Young, who was behind this challenge had the pleasure of dropping off 360 mug rugs today. She stated “We would like to gift every resident a little something for the holiday season. Guild Challenge Co-ordinator, Alison Young, encouraged members at the October Guild meeting to make a hand-made mug rug (fabric coaster) for every resident at Mapleview that will hold their cup of coffee or tea and a few sweets. “Mapleview has 256 residents and the Guild has just over 100 members” stated Young, “so I hoped that each member would make 2 – 3 mug rugs. I was so surprised that our members made 360 mug rugs!” Mapleview will have enough mug rugs to give one to every resident along with new residents and to replace the mug rugs if they get lost or damaged.

“The members created some lovely, unique and very creative mug rugs” stated member Kathleen Bryant, who convinced her husband to donate one of his hand-made wooden clappers as a prize for the member who made the most rugs. Kim Gignac received first prize for making 40 mug rugs followed by Patricia Pihlaja who made 32, Marissa Fragomeni who made 25 and Darlene McFarling who made 21. The 2nd – 4th place winners each won a fat quarter bundle of fabric.
