** This story was updated at 5 p.m. Wednesday to include that the plumbing issue has been resolved at Queen Elizabeth Public School and the school will reopen Thursday **

Parents were informed of a closure of Queen Elizabeth Public School on Tuesday due to overflowing toilets.

The Algoma District School Board sent messages to parents of children at the school around noon on Tuesday stating overflowing toilets as the reason for the evacuation.

"We are evacuating the students and staff to the John Rhodes Community Centre as a precautionary measure for health and safety reasons," said a message from the school board to parents that was shared with SooToday.

A GFL sewage truck was observed at the school at about 1:30 p.m., with hoses leading into the building.

In an email, board spokesperson Fran Walsh confirmed the students were evacuated to an alternate site as a precautionary measure for health and safety reasons while plant staff evaluated the situation.

"Students remained at the alternate site for the afternoon," Walsh said.

The board announced on Wednesday afternoon that the plumbing issue has been fixed.

"This is an important update from the Algoma District School Board for families of Queen Elizabeth Public School," the message said.

"We are happy to report that the plumbing issue has been resolved, and the affected areas have been cleaned and sanitized.

"The school will reopen on Thursday."
