Save Our Young Adults from Drug Abuse has issued a drug alert over Facebook due to an apparent increase in drug-related poisonings in the Sault over the last week.

“Carry Narcan . . . test your drugs (Soya and other agencies have drug testing kits), call 911, keep an eye on your friends," founder Connie Raynor-Elliott said today in a post on the SOYA Facebook page.

“Algoma Public Health is advising community partners working with people who use drugs that there has been an increase in suspected drug-related poisonings in Sault Ste. Marie and area over the past week."

Never use alone, Raynor-Elliott said.

“If this is not possible, have someone you trust check on you or use the National Overdose Response System (NORS) virtual safer consumption hotline at 1-888-688-NORS (6677)."

Raynor-Elliott said anyone using drugs should start with a low dose and increase slowly, especially if trying something new or restarting use.

“Avoid mixing substances. Call 911 if you suspect drug-related poisoning.”

SooToday has reached out to Algoma Public Health for more information.

An earlier version of this story said increase in drug-related deaths. Algoma Public Health has clarified it was an increase in drug-related poisonings.
