What city facilities are open and closed over the holidays

Garbage collection as well as city transit will be affected as a result

With the holiday season on tap, some services offered by the City of Sault Ste. Marie will be affected by Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Administrative offices will close on Dec. 24 at noon and will also be closed on Dec. 25, 26, and Jan. 1.

This includes the cemetery office, Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre, GFL Memorial Gardens office, the Sault transit office, Fire Services administration, and public works and engineering services.

City operated arenas, including the John Rhodes Community Centre and Northern Community Centre, are closed Dec. 25, 26, and January 1.

Free holiday skating, sponsored by Algoma Steel, is available and a schedule can be found here.

The Downtown Plaza is open for skating on Christmas Eve from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Christmas Day from noon to 4 p.m.; Boxing Day from noon to 4 p.m.; New Year's Eve from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and New Years Day from noon to 4 p.m.

Regular hours are Monday to Friday from noon to 9 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The inaugural New Year’s Even Puck Drop is happening on Dec. 31 at 8 p.m. and midnight.

The GFL Memorial Gardens will close at noon on Dec. 24 and 31 and will be closed on Jan. 1. Administrative offices and the box office will be closed on Dec. 25, 26, and Jan. 1. A full hours list for the facility can be found here.

The Northern Community Centre will be closed on Dec. 24 at 4 p.m. and reopen on Dec. 27. The facility will also close at 4 p.m. on Dec. 31 remain closed  on Jan. 1.

The Bay Street Active Living Centre and Northern Community Centre Seniors 55+: will have no programming from Dec. 23 to 29 while being open for registered programming Dec. 30, 31, 2 and 3. It will also be closed from Jan. 1-4. 

The Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site will be closed Dec. 22 to Jan. 2.

 The James L. McIntyre Centennial Library and the North Branch Library will close on Dec. 24 noon. Both locations will be closed on Dec. 25 and Dec. 26. On Dec. 31, the James L. McIntyre Centennial Library and the North Branch will both be closed early, starting at 4:30 p.m.

There will be no garbage or recycling collection on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. Both garbage and recycling will be one day late following Christmas Day and New Year's Day. There will be garbage and recycling collection on Boxing Day.

All garbage must be in the rollout cart and meet the city’s weight restrictions and bag tags must be attached to any bags beyond the rollout cart capacity. 

Cardboard, steel cans, aluminum containers, glass bottles, #1 and #2 plastics, and all wrapping paper other than foil or cellophane can be recycled.  

Natural Christmas trees, towels, blankets, gently used books, magazines etc. can be dropped off at the Clean North collection depot at the Cambrian Mall parking lot from Dec. 26 to Jan. 11.

The Landfill site will close at 3 p.m. on Dec. 24 and will be closed on Dec. 25, 26, and Jan. 1.

The last City Transit buses will depart the terminal on Dec. 24 at 5 p.m. Transit will not operate on Dec. 25 and 26. Regular service will run on Dec. 31 with no regular transit on Jan. 1. The transit office will be closed on Dec. 25, 26, and Jan. 1.

For Parabus service, the last pickup or return on Dec. 24 will be at 5 p.m. Parabus will operate on Dec. 25 and 26. The last pickup or return will be on Dec. 31 at 11:15 p.m. and there will be no Parabus service on Jan. 1.

Free downtown parking is available from Dec. 16 to Dec. 31 and is available at all meters, pay and display units, and two-hour municipal parking lots in the downtown area. The exemption does not include parking in accessible spaces without a permit, any identified no parking areas, fire routes and private lots. Motorists should respect two-hour limits.
