What will happen with the collapsed Tarentorus Sports Club?

Curling rink portion of the multi-use club was levelled in a major structural collapse Wednesday afternoon

The future of the Tarentorus Sports Club remains unclear after a structural collapse knocked down the curling rink portion of the building on Wednesday.

Firefighters responded to the 0-100 block of Avery Road shortly before 12:30 p.m., public education officer Aaron Gravelle said in an email to SooToday

Police officers, PUC Services, Enbridge Gas and paramedics also attended the scene.

No injuries were reported.

Gravelle confirmed damage to the building was not caused by an explosion, contrary to speculation on social media.

On Wednesday afternoon, the sports club made a post on Facebook expressing thanks to everyone who helped after the roof collapsed.

"Although my heart is completely broken, I am so very thankful that no one got hurt!!" the post said.

"Johnie got out in time and had it happened last night when our curling league was going on . . . the outcome could have been so much worse . . . so thankful!"

"A huge thank you to the Sault Ste Marie fire team, PUC workers, building inspectors and Nor Pro Security for being amazing today!

"For anyone having events this summer – don’t panic – we have a plan!"

A volunteer for the multi-use club said they will have more information soon.

"We will be holding a member meeting to discuss the future of a club at a later time."
