It's been a place he's been trying to find since way back in 1997, and after 6 full-seasons of racing, night #9 of the 2003 season at the Kinross Speedway finally brought Larry Young Sr. (26) to victory lane.
The veteran racer out of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan had paid his dues in the Factory Stock division for 6 long seasons before opting to run alongside son Larry Jr. this season in the Pure Stock Division.
Although he has won a number of races in his career, the final race of the night - the feature - had always found its way to duck out of the way of this driver.
Add to that the fact he had yet to win a single race behind the wheel of his 1973 Chevy Nova and that makes this past Saturday night that much more special for Young Sr.
The Pure Stock Division would see Ray Golladay Jr. (20) set fast time at 16.930.
Bill Cryderman (61) won the four-car dash before Art Lavigne (72) took the chequered flag in the Australian Pursuit.
Richard Huyck (27) and Ray Golladay (22) took their respective heat race wins.
The 20-lap feature would roll onto the ¼ mile with Richard Huyck and Larry Young Sr. making up your front row.
These two cars would begin to pace the field right from the beginning with Mike Porcaro (15) sitting in third.
In the most exciting feature this class has ever put on at the Speedway in memory, the field remained bunched up for the entire 20 caution-free laps.
Three and four wide racing was the common occurrence and passing required patience and skill, as the field was that close together.
When the white flag flew, it was anyone's race, as the field would continue to battle it out for each and every position coming out of turn 4.
The chequered flag would fly with Young Sr. taking his first career feature win at the Kinross Speedway.
Richard Huyck, Ray Golladay, Ben Huyck (28) and Art Lavigne would take top 5 honours.
Congratulations to all drivers on the excellent race!
On another note, I would like to mention that a new nickname has been deemed for Pure Stock Driver Randy Miller.
During hotlap sessions tonight Randy took his #73 car off turn 1 and rolled it over. Luckily Randy was o.k. and him and his pit crew worked hard to get it back out for the rest of the night.
Despite his request to be called "Rumblin" Randy Miller he is now known as "Rolling" Randy Miller. Now Randy, you can work on the "Rumblin" part!!
Pee Wee Fountain (50) was the fastest qualifier in the Factory Stock Division coming in under the lights at 15.650. A mere 13 hundredths separated you top 6 cars on this night.
Mark Beaudoin (74) was the winner of the Four Car Dash while Josh Ware (7) went the distance for the Australian Pursuit win.
Trout Lake, Michigan driver Jerry Ball (8) took home the 10-lap heat race.
Paul Fox (36) and Josh Ware (7) would lead the pack to the green flag for their final race of the night.
Ware would look good early on leading the field for the first two laps before Jerry Ball would take his 4th starting position to the front.
While Ball was making that move to the front Jason Praysner (5) was doing the same and now found himself in 2nd place.
With 5 laps to go Praysner, Pee Wee Fountain (50) and Beaudoin were all knocking on Ball's backdoor looking for the win.
Their time would expire as Jerry Ball would grab his first feature win of the season.
Praysner and Fountain rounded out the top 3.
Current point leader Jared Nightlinger (48) would set fast time in the 4-Cylinder Division once again, this week coming in at a time of 18.280.
John Mayer (9) won the four-car dash while James Thompson took home the Australian Pursuit win and Nightlinger took the 10-lap heat race.
The field would be brought to the green by rookie Barry Williams (24) and Thompson.
Thompson's lead would last 1 lap before Mayer would bring his '88 Ford Tempo to the lead as he looked for his 4th feature win of the season.
By lap 3, Nightlinger had taken his final starting position up to 2nd and began to challenge for the lead.
These two cars would battle as they have all season long before Nightlinger would capture the top spot on lap 7.
Mayer and Nightlinger would put a couple of cars down a lap before this one would end with Nightlinger capturing his 5th feature win of the season.
Mayer, John Clawson (35), Thompson and Chris Brady (17) were your top 5.
The fourth and final division to qualify on this night was the Super Late Model division.
Dave Vansloten would be the fastest of the field and would set a new track record in the meantime coming in at 13.750 seconds.
Onaway Motor Speedway regular Curtis Anderson (51) would take the four-car dash win before going 2-for-2 after grabbing the heat race honours.
Dennis Aho (75) and Anderson would make up your front row for the 20-lap main event.
Anderson, who was looking for his 2nd feature win at this U.P. facility, would be your leader for the first 4 laps before Tim Aho (27) would take over on lap 5.
Aho, who is in a tight championship battle with Vansloten, would hold off the hard charges of Vansloten and Anderson until lap 18 when the Rudyard, Michigan driver (Vansloten) would make the pass coming out of turn 4.
Vansloten would only have 3 circuits around the Speedway to capture his 4th feature win of the season along with closing the gab to the top spot to 8 points.
Aho, Anderson, D. Aho and Mark Howland (45) made up your top 5.
In the final race of the night, "Frank" took home the mechanics race that was 10 cars strong. He was behind the wheel of Paul Fox's familiar #36 Factory Stock.
Congratulations and good driving!!
