The Soo North Stars couldn't have asked for a better start to the season, as the team remains unbeaten after a sweep of the New Liskeard Cubs this weekend. Playing their first five games of the Great North Midget League regular season at home, the North Stars improved to 5-0 after wins of 6-2 on Saturday night and 3-2 on Sunday afternoon over the Cubs at the John Rhodes Community Centre. "We're very happy right now. We're going on the road with a 5-0 record, we've seen some different teams and we didn't really see a 5-0 start happening at the beginning of the year but this team is coming around nicely," said North Stars head coach Mike Hall. "We're really pleased with our back end. That was a question mark for us at the beginning of the season but they have played well and did a great job for us this weekend." On Sunday, Adam Kauppi, Michael Sharp on the power play and Matt D'Agostini, who also added an assist, scored in the first period to give the North Stars a 3-1 lead. The game tightened up into a defensive battle through the final two periods with both teams limiting each other to few quality scoring chances. Danny Loach scored the game's final goal for the Cubs at the mid-point of the second period. Joel Imbeau scored for the Cubs in the first period. "I was really pleased with the composure we showed (on Sunday)," said Hall. "The game was close but we didn't panic and didn't give up too many chances. We played well Saturday too and scored some really nice goals." On Saturday, the North Stars scored three goals in the first and third periods to defeat New Liskeard 6-2. Matt D'Agostini led the North Stars with two goals and an assist while Michael D'Agostini, Kauppi, Frank D'Addetta and Sharp, who also added two assists, scored once each. Travis O'Brien played well and won his first game in net for the North Stars. The North Stars begin a four game road swing with a pair of games next weekend. The locals visit Kirkland Lake on Saturday and New Liskeard on Sunday.
