Pickleball players will descend upon Sault Ste. Marie this weekend as the city hosts the Pickleball Ontario Championship Series North Region Tournament.

The event goes from Friday to Sunday at the John Rhodes Arena.

“The tournament will be using a round robin format with a single elimination medal round,” explained Pickleball Ontario on its website.

Winners will then head to the Championship Series Finals in Collingwood next month to face pickleball players from around the province.

“We extend a warm invitation to our members from the North, East, Central East, Central West, Niagara, and Southwest regions of our province, offering them a unique opportunity to participate in this championship series,” said Daphne Reid, the president of Pickleball Ontario in a news release.

“We are excited to facilitate an avenue for our members, players and public to engage in the growing phenomenon of North America’s fastest growing sport.”

This weekend’s action kicks off Friday at 6 p.m. with local police and fire departments facing off in a “paddle battle.”

Those looking to check out the competition are encouraged to make a donation to KidSport for entry.
