After a sluggish start, the Soo North Stars exploded with a seven goal second period effort to beat the Kapuskasing Flyers 9-6 on Saturday night at the John Rhodes Centre.
The win improves the North Stars record to 2-0 in the young Great North Midget League season. The teams meet again Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the John Rhodes Centre.
Kapuskasing took control of the game early and beat North Stars goaltender Travis O'Brien for four goals in 16 minutes of play. O'Brien was replaced with Michael Maulucci in an effort to settle down the team. The Flyers led 4-2 after the first period.
The North Stars took a 9-5 lead into the dressing room after two periods and settled in defensively to hold the Flyers to one goal in the third period.
Matt Caria led the North Stars with two goals and two assists. Paul Dupont added two goals for the winners while Zac Torquato, Matt D'Agostini and Tyler Gendron scored a goal and added two assists each. Michael Sharp and Kyle Rodgers rounded out the Soo scoring.
