St. Basil remains unbeaten with one to go

Rachel Cobean and Heidi Jaaskelainen scored 10 points each to the lead the Saints to a 54-19 win over the White Pines Wolverines in High School Girls Basketball League play.

The Saints have long secured the league championship and a Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (NOSSA) berth while the St. Mary's Knights and Korah Colts are locked in a battle for second spot and home court advantage in the semi-finals with an 8-3 record.

The Knight's jumped into the tie with Korah on Tuesday with a 52-34 win over the Bawating Braves. Jennifer Sweezy led the Knights with 23 points while Jane Howard added nine. Chrsitine Thayer led Bawating with 10 and Sam Marasco added eight.

In another senior game, Ashling McWilliam's 14 points and Janine Olthius' 12 led Sir James Dunn past Mount St. Joseph College 60-35. Heather Lewis replied with 10 for the Mount.

In junior division play, Vanessa Chaimbrone scored a game high 20 points to led the Mount past Sir James Dunn 55-35. Sarah Miller scored 19 points for SJD.

St. Mary's rolled past Bawating 47-22 as Kira Favaro led the winners with nine points and Nicole Marasco added six. Amanda Whitmell drained 16 points for the Braves.

Abby DiDonato scored 10 points and Courtney Dubas eight to lead St. Basil past White Pines 38-25. Miriam Pinder scored eight points for the Wolverines.

In action on Monday, Korah edged Sir James Dunn 36-33 in senior. Liza Turpin with 11 points and Lauren Podolski with eight led the Colts. McWilliam scored 12 and Olthius eight for the Eagles.

Katie Antler and Jaclyn Cummings scored nine points each to pace the Colts past the Eagles 33-20. Miller led the Eagles with eight and Alexis Ambeault added six.

On doubleheader is scheduled for Wednesday as Sir James Dunn meets the Mount. The regular season concludes on Thursday as Korah visits Bawating, Sir James Dunn plays host to St. Mary's and the Mount visits St. Basil.

Junior games begin at 4:15 p.m. followed by senior action at 5:45 p.m.
