Wolves nip Hounds, again.

A lack of discipline cost the Soo Greyhounds a victory as the Sudbury Wolves scored a late power play goal to sweep both games of a home and home series. Kyle Lamb's power play marker with 5:16 remaining in regulation time gave the Sudbury Wolves a 4-3 Ontario Hockey League exhibition win over the Greyhounds at Memorial Gardens on Sunday afternoon. With a constant parade of players being sent to the penalty box, the both teams were forced to the majority of the game on special teams. "We took a lot of penalties today and did not play with a lot of discipline," said Soo Greyhounds head coach Marty Abrams. "By taking so many penalties we expended much of our energy killing them off and had a hard time establishing an attack of our own." "It's really difficult to pick a team in games like this when the majority of the game is spent short-handed. It is hard to get guys onto the ice to see them play when you are a man or two short the whole game. We did get a chance today, though, to get a look at how some players perform in certain situations." The Greyhounds got off a good start but were quickly forced back on their heels by the Wolves. Despite being outshot 14-7, the Greyhounds luckily found themselves ahead 2-0 after one period. Matt Maccarone opened the scoring with a short-handed goal 5:27 into the contest as the lanky centre one-timed a pass from Matt Puntureri on a two on one break. First round draft pick Chris Lawrence scored with 28 seconds remaining in the first period as the centre walked into the slot and fired a shot between the legs of Wolves goaltender Joel Whitmarsh. Greyhounds goaltender Jackub Cech kept his team in the game with several big saves including a huge glove stop on Wolves star Zach Stortini on a blast from the slot in the first period. Cech received a loud ovation from the Gardens faithful when replaced by Kevin Druce mid-way through the second period. Sudbury took control of the game in the second period with three consecutive goals from Howie Martin, Martin Doyle and Chanse Fitzpatrick to pull ahead 3-2. The Greyhounds managed to tie the game late in the second period with their second short-handed goal of the night. Jacob King took control of a clearing attempt which was misplayed by the Sudbury defense and fired a shot over goaltender Kevin Beech. Lamb's game winner was the only goal of the third period. Sudbury outshot the Greyhounds 38-19. "I thought Puntureri was good tonight and so was Tyler Kennedy and Michael Krelove," said Abrams. "Those guys are energy players and they all played well." With the loss, the Hounds fall to 0-3 in the pre-season with three games left on the road next weekend. The team is in Windsor to play the Spitfires on Friday and before meeting the Spits again on Saturday in Leamington. The Greyhounds conclude the trip on Sunday afternoon in Saginaw. "I would like to get a win because I think a win would help us. The confidence of the players on this team is fragile right now after last season and we need to build and work together as a team," said Abrams. The Greyhounds next home action is Sept. 19 when they host the Ottawa 67's in their OHL season opener at Memorial Gardens.
